Meier Receives Two-Year Contract Extension

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami and head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier have agreed to a contract extension, Vice President/Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich announced Monday.

Meier, who is the all-time winningest coach (324-210) in Miami basketball history – men’s or women’s – received an additional two years on her contract, extending it through the 2026-27 season.

“Katie is a terrific coach, teacher and mentor for our student-athletes and an outstanding representative for Miami Athletics on and off the court,” Radakovich said. “We are excited to have her continue to lead our women’s basketball program for many more seasons to come.”

The 2021-22 was nothing short of historic for Meier and the Hurricanes, as they made it to the ACC Championship title game for the first time in program history. Miami also made its 12th postseason appearance and ninth NCAA Tournament bid in the Meier era.

Meier coached an ACC All-Freshman Team member in Ja’Leah Williams, an All-ACC Honorable Mention honoree in Kelsey Marshall and three All-ACC Academic Team members in Marshall, Williams and Destiny Harden during the 2021-22 campaign.

But, most importantly to Meier, she will have four Hurricanes walk the stage at graduation this spring, preserving her proudest achievement – a 100 percent graduation success rate.

“Obviously, Miami is home. It has become quite rare that a coach in any sport is able to plant such deep roots in a community,” Meier said. “Every day, I am grateful to represent this amazing university and to coach 17 years’ worth of outstanding student athletes. This is an exciting time at The U and I am thankful to be a part of all the success.”

From being named Associated Press National Coach of the Year in 2011 and USA Basketball Coach of the Year in 2013 to being inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2017, Meier’s name has become synonymous with elite basketball.

Five All-America honorees have emerged under Meier’s tutelage – Tamara James (2006), Shenise Johnson (2011, 2012), Riquna Williams (2011, 2012), Adrienne Motley (2016) and Beatrice Mompremier (2019).

All five of those players were drafted into the WNBA following their time at Miami, most recent being Mompremier who was selected 20th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2020 WNBA Draft. In total, Meier has coached 24 players that have gone on to play professionally, whether in the WNBA or overseas.

Under Meier’s direction, 14 players have earned All-ACC Team postseason accolades, including Shenise Johnson who earned ACC Player of the Year (2011). Five Canes have been tabbed to the ACC All-Defensive Team, while five rookies have made an appearance on the ACC All-Freshman Team. Emese Hof (2019), earned the first ever ACC Most Improved Player accolade.

Meier’s players have also excelled in the classroom as 13 players have earned a spot on the ACC All-Academic team, with five players earning multi-year bids. Additionally, Miami has placed someone on the ACC Honor Roll in 17 of Meier’s 17 seasons.
