SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Redshirt freshman Daphnee Lavassas paced the University of Miami cross country team at the ACC Championships on Friday morning.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think today was indicative of how hard we work or where our fitness is at,” said head coach Cody Halsey. “It was a tough day for both the men and women. I do think we are a collectively young group and that we will learn and get better from today, which I look forward to.”

Lavassas was the first to cross the finish line for the Canes, in a time of 21:53.7 to place 72nd. In her first career postseason appearance, freshman Elle Mezzio finished shortly after in 22:17.6.

Freshman Natalie Varela rounded out the top-three Hurricane women performers, coming in at 22:43.7.

The duo of Austen Cannon and Andrew Madden were the first runners for Miami’s men’s squad to finish. Cannon ran a time of 26:29.1, while Madden was just 2.7 seconds back at 26:41.8.

Miami’s women finished 14th and the men placed 15th.
