Miami Drops to Virginia Tech on Road

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Miami Hurricanes were upended by the Virginia Tech Hokies, 5-0, Thursday evening at Thompson Field.

Virginia Tech (9-5-2, 3-3-2 ACC) struck early and never looked back.

Senior midfielder Emily Gray, who entered the match second in the conference with 23 points, recorded a brace and an assist.

Gray scored in the 10th and 37th minutes before assisting Allie Lewis’ tally in the 62nd minute. Freshman Emma Pelkowski and redshirt sophomore Holly Weber also found the back of the net for the Hokies.

The Hurricanes (4-10, 1-7 ACC) registered seven shots, including four on target.

Miami generated its best opportunity in the 57th minute when sophomore Katerina Molina ripped an attempt from point-blank range. Virginia Tech goalkeeper Alia Skinner sprawled to her left to push Molina’s rocket wide of the frame.  

Forwards Gudrun Haralz, Taylor Shell and Mikayla Tupper all notched shots on goal.

Twenty-two Canes appeared in the contest, including senior Johanna Barth, who logged a career-high 23 minutes.

The Hurricanes conclude their 2021 road slate Sunday when Miami visits No. 2 Virginia. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
