M. Tennis Sweeps FAU, 7-0
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team secured its fifth consecutive home sweep Friday night, topping South Alabama, 7-0, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes (6-2) have now opened the 2020 home campaign with 33 straight points and have an unblemished 28-0 mark in completed home singles matches.
Similar to each of the Hurricanes previous four home matches, Miami jumped out to the early lead through doubles action and never looked back.
Facing off against Filip Krolo and Maxime Lapraille at No. 1 doubles, No. 14-ranked sophomore Franco Aubone and junior Benjamin Hannestad earned a 6-3 win.
On court 3, No. 46-ranked sophomore Francisco Bastias and junior Adria Soriano Barrera locked up the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph over Yovan Lambros and Thomas Guy, 6-3.
With the doubles point clinched, the final match remained unfinished, as redshirt senior Dane Dunlap and junior Bojan Jankulovski trailed 4-5 against Alvaro Fernandez Horta and Jason Legall.
Carrying momentum into singles, No. 32 Soriano Barrera almost immediately doubled Miami’s lead with a dominating, 6-0, 6-1, performance over Legall, winning the first 11 games.
Competing at No. 5 singles, Aubone breezed past Lambros, 6-1, 6-1, to give Miami the commanding 3-0 lead.
Almost simultaneously, Dunlap topped Fernandez Horta, 6-3, 6-2, on court 3, while Bastias knocked off #114 Lapraille, 6-2, 6-0, to secure the team victory.
The final two remaining matches were played out, with Jankulovski besting Krolo, 6-2, 6-4.
Battling Gerard Escandell into a third-set tiebreaker, junior William Grattan-Smith overcame being down 1-4 in the breaker to secure the team sweep, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Up next, the Hurricanes will return to Fort Meyers, Fla., to take on Florida Gulf Coast Saturday at 5 p.m.
