W. Tennis Drops Road Match at No. 13 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team fell, 4-1, at No. 13 Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center.

Miami (1-2) opened doubles with freshman Florencia Urrutia and senior Yuna Ito topping Marcella Cruz and Dasha Kourkina, 6-2. However, Vanderbilt (3-2) quickly countered with a win on court two, as Anna Ross and Emma Kurtz bested freshmen Selma Cadar and Nada Dimovska, 6-1.

In the deciding doubles match, sophomore Daevenia Achong and senior Estela Perez Somarriba came up short against ninth-ranked Georgia Drummy and Christina Rosca, 4-6.

In singles, Vanderbilt doubled its lead when No. 24 Drummy defeated No. 85 Achong, 2-6, 3-6.

After dropping a heartbreaking opening-set tiebreaker, freshman Maya Tahan looked to mount a comeback in the second set, but ultimately came up short, 6-7 (2-7), 4-6, against Ross.

Facing off against No. 31 Rosca, third-ranked Estela Perez Somarriba secured her sixth straight-set victory of the spring, in as many matches, earning a 6-3, 6-4 triumph. It marked her second win over Rosca, whom she fell to in 2019, this spring.

In the final match to be completed, Ito dropped a closely contested match with Cruz, 5-7, 4-6.

The final two matches remained unfinished with Urrutia trailing Kurtz, 4-6, 6-3, 1-4, while Dimovska was down, 1-6, 0-1, to Kourkina when play was halted.

The Hurricanes, who won six of seven singles matches against the Commodores when the teams met Jan. 18-20 at the Miami Spring Invite, were unable to duplicate the same success Saturday.

Set to play a doubleheader, the Hurricanes will head across town to play Tennessee State at 5:30 p.m. ET.
