Canes Host Nova Southeastern for Exhibition Game

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team opens the 2019-20 season on Tuesday night when it hosts Nova Southeastern at 7 p.m. at the Watsco Center.

The exhibition game will air live on ACC Network Extra with Alex Schwartz and Murray Jarman on the call. This marks the fifth meeting in seven years between the Canes and the Sharks, with Miami coming out on top on all five occasions, including a 91-67 victory over Nova a season ago.

The Hurricanes finished the 2018-19 season at 25-9 (12-4 ACC) and ranked No. 20 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, marking the third time in five years that Miami has finished in the top-25 and fifth time under head coach Katie Meier.

Miami returns one of the best players in collegiate women’s basketball in Beatrice Mompremier. The redshirt senior was named the 2019 ACC Preseason Player of the Year by the league head coaches and the Blue Ribbon Panel. She is just the second Hurricane in program history to be named ACC Preseason Player of the Year, following in the footsteps of Miami great Shenise Johnson, who received the honor as a senior in 2011-12.

The 2019-20 squad features a freshman class of five new faces, all hailing from different states/countries. The freshman class has an international flavor to it as the group features a pair of international players – Moulayna Johnson Sidi Baba (Sweden) and Kenza Salgues (France). Joining the duo are Sydnee Roby, Yasmeen Chang and Brianna Jackson. Roby and Jackson were both top-100 recruits according to espnW HoopGurlz, coming in at No. 60 and 92, respectively.

Nova Southeastern finished the 2018-19 season with a 21-12 record and a 13-7 mark in Sunshine State Conference play. Nova won seven of its last 10 games a season ago to reach the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The Sharks lost three of their five starters with the departure of Alison Hughes, Christen Prasse and Mikayla Thompson. Hughes led the team in scoring last season while Prasse paced the Sharks in rebounding.

The Hurricanes officially open the 2019-20 regular season on Nov. 10 when they host Jackson State for a 3 p.m. match-up at the Watsco Center.
