Golf Secures Top-Five Team Finish in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas  – Competing at the 46th Betsy Rawls Invitational, the University of Miami golf team garnered a top-five team finish, placing fourth with a two-day total score of six-under 858.

Senior Renate Grimstad led the Hurricanes at the par 72, 6,353-yard University of Texas Golf Club, finishing fifth, capping the 54 holes at 8-under 208.

Joining Grimstad among the top-15 individuals, junior Kristyna Frydlova and sophomore Anna Backman finished tied for 11th at even-par (216).

“I think everyone played great,” Miami head coach Patti Rizzo said. “If they could just get rid of their double bogeys we would’ve had a good chance to win. This team is very strong and we’re looking forward to the next tournament. Also, Renni just needs to keep knocking at the door and eventually she’ll get a win.”

Leading the charge for Miami in the final round, freshman Daniella Barrett rebounded from a double bogey on the ninth hole, carding five birdies and finishing three-under 69 on the day. Overall, the Turki, Finland, native concluded the event tied for 37th at six-over 222.

Bouncing back from a four-over-par opening round on Saturday morning, Frydlova went four-under over the final 36 holes, while carding a trio of birdies on Sunday to finish just outside the top-10.

Tying for first with 16 birdies, Grimstad held a stroke lead on the field through 42 holes at 11-under-par. However, a trio of bogies on the back nine made the difference as the Bergen, Norway, native locked up a fifth-place finish at eight-under 208.

Freshman Franziska Sliper closed out the final 18 holes at one-over-par, to cap the weekend tied for 52nd at 12-over 228.

Rounding out the Hurricanes lineup on Sunday, Backman finished two-over-par, to place tied for 11th at even-par over the course of the complete 54 holes.

Miami will return to the Longhorn State next Sunday, when the Hurricanes travel to San Marcos, Texas, to compete in the Jim West Challenge, Oct. 20-21.
