TULSA, Okla. – All good things must come to an end.
Senior Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team saw her 27-match winning streak conclude Friday in the ITA Women’s All-American Championships main draw Round of 16.
The second-ranked player in the country and top seed in the draw, Perez-Somarriba dropped a 0-6, 1-6 decision to Texas’ Anna Turati, ranked No. 17 and seeded No. 15, at LaFortune Tennis Center.
For Perez-Somarriba, the setback was her first since March 22 against then-No. 31 Anna Rogers on the road at NC State. It was her first straight-set defeat since Jan. 12 versus then-No. 15 Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt.
The Madrid native was 41-1 in her prior 42 completed match, since Jan. 13, one day after falling to Rosca. The stretch, which featured a 10-0 start this fall, included claiming the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship crown, the second in program history, May 25 in Orlando, Fla.
The Hurricanes will resume play Oct. 18-21 in Tallahassee, Fla., at the annual ITA Southeast Regional Championships
