CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team will make its first-ever trip to the University of Illinois on Monday, Dec. 2, as part of the 21st annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge, which was announced Thursday by the conference office.
The event runs from Dec. 2-4 and matches all 14 Big Ten teams against all but one ACC member, with each conference hosting seven games. Network assignments and tip times will be announced at a later date.
Miami is 6-6 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, including 2-4 in road contests.
The Canes are 2-1 all-time against Illinois. UM topped Illinois, 70-61, on Dec. 2, 2014, in Coral Gables in the programs’ last meeting, which also was part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The teams played in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, with UM scoring a 63-59 triumph in a second-round matchup in Austin, Texas. The only other contest came on Dec. 28, 1969, an 86-76 Illinois victory in Coral Gables.
ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the event. All games will also be available via the ESPN app.
The conferences played to a 7-7 stalemate in the 2018 Challenge. Since the Challenge’s inception, the ACC has won 12 events, while the Big Ten has won five. The ACC took home the Commissioner’s Cup 2016 and 2017.
