CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In the fourth consecutive computer-generated edition of the 2019 Oracle/ITA national rankings list, the University of Miami men’s tennis team cracks the country’s top-25 list, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the ITA.
Miami (16-7, 7-3 ACC) ranks No. 25 and, for first time since the end of the 2009 season, is listed among the nation’s 25 best teams for a fourth-straight week. That year, Miami was ranked from April 7 through the end of the season, while also reaching the NCAA Team Championship Sweet 16.
In the final home matches of the regular season, the Hurricanes split a pair of contests against top-50 conference foes, opening with a 4-3 triumph over then-No. 43 Virginia Tech on Friday. Two days later, Miami came up short against fifth-ranked Virginia, 4-0.
With its 7-3 conference mark, Miami has locked up a top-five seed in the ACC Championship for the first time since 2011. Squaring off against No. 22 NC State Friday at noon, in Raleigh, N.C., the Hurricanes will look to capture a win and secure a top-four seed and an automatic berth in the ACC Quarterfinals.
In addition, Miami is one of 15 schools in the top 25 in both men’s and women’s tennis, five of which are in the ACC. It is the first time both Hurricane teams are in the top 25 since the release on April 19, 2011.
Overall, the Canes are one of nine ACC teams in the rankings this week, including fourth-ranked Wake Forest, fifth-ranked Virginia, ninth-ranked North Carolina, No. 22 NC State, No. 27 Notre Dame, No. 30 Florida State, No. 40 Georgia Tech and No. 49 Duke.
Individually, a pair of sophomores sit among the top 100 in singles, with Adria Soriano Barrera ranking No. 55 and Bojan Jankulovski coming it at No. 81.
Janulovski jumped 10 spots in the rankings following a 1-0 week in singles, earning a straight-set victory against Virginia Tech’s Brandon Perez.
In the match, the Skopje, Macedonia native won the final five games of the opening set to take it 6-3, before winning the final three games of the second set to seal the victory, 6-3, 6-4.
