CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Anne den Otter and Tristan Schultheis of the Miami track and field program each won their respective events on the opening day of the outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational Friday night.

The Canes hosted day one of its annual Hurricane Invitational at Cobb Stadium with multiple field events and the men and women’s 5000m.

Senior den Otter was the first Cane to win an event in the outdoor season opener as she finished first in the women’s 5000m with a time of 17:45.76, just one second behind her personal-best time. For the second year in a row, den Otter was the first of five Miami women to finish the race as sophomore Simone Vreeland came in fourth with a personal-best time of 18:03.01, shedding more than two minutes off her previous PR.

Emma Langlois finished ninth with her own personal-best time of 19:10.08, while sophomore Daria Pietropaolo and junior Alison Johnson closed it out for the Canes.

On the men’s side, Dylan Sykes was the lone Cane to finish the 5000m with his third-place finish at 15:28.59. The sophomore set a new personal-best time, taking nearly 16 seconds off his previous best.

Schultheis was the second Cane to win on Friday night, tying his outdoor personal-best mark of 2.08m. The mark is also the fifth-best height in program history.

The Canes will return to the track Saturday beginning at noon with the women’s shot put, men’s javelin and the men’s and women’s long jump. The men’s and women’s 4x400m relay, set for 5 p.m., will conclude the Hurricane Invitational.
