Canes Fall at No. 3 Mississippi State, 4-1

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Facing third-ranked Mississippi State in the first match of Friday’s doubleheader, the University of Miami men’s tennis team (4-2) fell to the Bulldogs, 4-1, at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
 
In doubles action, Mississippi State (3-0) got off to a fast start, picking up a pair of wins on court 1 and 3.
 
At No. 3 doubles, Trevor Foshey and Gregor Ramskogler topped redshirt junior Dane Dunlap and junior Stephen Madonia, 6-1, while freshmen Franco Aubone and Kaya Gore dropped their match on court 1 against No. 36 Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic, 1-6.
 
Facing a top-10 doubles pair, sophomores Adria Soriano Barrera and Bojan Jankulovski trailed, 1-5, against seventh-ranked Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini prior to the Bulldogs clinching the doubles point.
 
In singles, MSU quickly added to its lead with No. 78 Florian Broska topping Gore, 6-1, 6-0.
 
At No. 2 singles, No. 35 Jankulovski fell against Oradini, 2-6, 3-6, as the Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead in the overall match.
 
Competing at No. 3 singles, freshman Francisco Bastias, ranked No. 97, got the Canes on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Rakic. With the win, Bastias improved to 5-0 during dual match play and 7-1 this spring.
 
Trailing, 1-4, in the opening set on court 5, Aubone rattled off four of the next five points to even the set at 5-5 against No. 93 Foshey. However, the freshman dropped the last two games in the set, ultimately coming up short, 5-7, 4-6, as the Bulldogs secured the victory, 4-1.
 
The remaining two matches remained unfinished, with Soriano Barrera and Dunlap battling their respective opponents in a third set.
 
In a top-25 singles clash, No. 11 Borges held a slight edge over No. 21 Soriano Barrera, 6-3, 4-6, 5-2, before the match was suspended, while Dunlap rebounded with a dominant second set against No. 67 Braun to force a third set, 4-6, 6-2, 1-2.
 
The Hurricanes are set to close out Friday’s doubleheader with a 7 p.m. ET matchup against Jackson State at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
