Perez-Somarriba Rolls to Third Round at ITA Fall Nationals
By Alex Schwartz
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team notched her second straight-set win in as many days Thursday at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
In a top-30 matchup, the third-ranked player in the nation and second-seeded player in the draw defeated Winthrop’s Lauren Proctor, 6-2, 6-0, at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
“Estela was able to make some tactical adjustments that made a big difference in the match. She was humble and worked hard to deserve [this win] today,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “She needs to continue to keep her pace and accelerate at the right moment. She is undoubtedly physically prepared for the long run.”
After Proctor cut Perez-Somarriba’s first-set lead to 3-2, the Madrid native won nine consecutive games to take the match against the three-time reigning Big South Player of the Year.
For Perez-Somarriba, the victory was her fourth over a top-30 player this fall and it extended her winning streak to seven straight. She is 12-1 on the season with each triumph coming in straight sets.
Perez-Somarriba will be back on the court Friday at 11 a.m. ET against Elysia Bolton of UCLA, seeded No. 13 in the draw and ranked third on the ITA’s newcomer list. Perez-Somarriba defeated the Bruin freshman, 6-4, 6-0, in the Oracle ITA Masters quarterfinals on Sept. 21.
Sunday’s tournament final in the Grand Canyon State will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and then re-aired on ESPNU two days later, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. ET. The victor will receive a main draw wild card berth to a 2019 Oracle Challenger Series event.
