Marzal Martinez Competes at Lawrence $25K

LAWRENCE, Kan. Lucia Marzal Martinez of the University of Miami women’s tennis team played as an amateur Sunday in the qualifying draw of the Lawrence $25K.

The Miami freshman faced the No. 11 seed in the bracket, Emma Navarro, and dropped a 0-6, 3-6 decision at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.

“Lucia needs to continue to grow and get better. She is such a physical and passionate player; we love having that on the team,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “We are excited for her to get back home to Miami and iron some things out before the beginning of our team season in January.”

Marzal Martinez, ranked No. 959 in world, squared off against player nearly 200 spots above her on the WTA list, as Navarro checks in at No. 766.

This was the second time Marzal Martinez has competed as an amateur in an ITF tournament this fall; she also took part in the Hilton Head Island $15K in September.

The Valencia, Spain, native finished the fall collegiate season with an 8-6 singles record and a 5-4 doubles mark. She won the singles championship at the Bedford Cup in October.
