AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team won three of the four singles flight championships Sunday at the Marliss Gruver Fall Invitational.
The Hurricanes earned the trophy in the final of all three draws in which it had at least one competitor at Auburn’s Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Junior Estela Perez-Somarriba won Flight No. 1, sophomore Ulyana Shirokova won Flight No. 3 and junior Yuna Ito topped her teammate, senior Ana Madcur, to win Flight No. 4.
The third-ranked player in the nation, top-seeded Perez-Somarriba garnered her third trophy in as many fall tournaments by defeating Kansas’ Malkia Ngounoue, 7-5, 6-2.
Shirokova posted a narrow victory, albeit in straight-set fashion, against Thea Rice of Arkansas, 7-5, 7-5, to claim her title.
In an all-Miami matchup, second-seeded Ito downed Madcur, 6-0, 6-4. It marked the second time the two made the same flight championship this fall, but the first time they actually played the match.
With her win, Ito (10-2) became the third Hurricane to reach double-digit victories this fall, joining Madcur (12-3) and Perez-Somarriba (10-1).
Freshman Lucia Marzal Martinez also tallied a win Sunday, registering a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Arkansas’ Lauren Alter in Flight No. 2 consolation draw action.
Senior Daniella Roldan dropped her Flight No. 2 main draw third-place matchup with Taylor Russo of Auburn, 2-6, 5-7.
Overall, the Hurricanes finished the weekend with a record of 17-9, including Ito’s matchup with Madcur and excluding one walkover victory. Miami finished 12-5 in singles action and 5-4 in doubles play.
