PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. In a top-10 matchup with a berth in the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships consolation draw on the line, Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team notched a dominant, straight-set victory.

The third-ranked player in the nation, Perez-Somarriba defeated No. 10 Michaela Gordon of Stanford, 6-2, 6-2, at the Riviera Tennis Club.

“Estela did a great job with her mental game today,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “Looking forward to seeing that again tomorrow. She seems focused and determined; it’s really fun to watch her play.”

The affair between Perez-Somarriba and Gordon pitted the 2018 ITA National Player to Watch against the 2018 ITA National Rookie of the Year, respectively. Gordon played at the top spot in the lineup for Stanford last year, helping the Cardinal win the national title.

Perez-Somarriba, who won the Oracle ITA Masters championship last month, was originally seeded second in the main draw, while Gordon held the eighth spot.

After her second top-10 win of the fall, Perez-Somarriba is set to take on Wisconsin’s Sara Castellano Sunday at noon in the back draw finale. The redshirt is unranked, but has defeated three top-20 players over the past two days.
