PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team fell to No. 103 Katarina Stresnakova of Oklahoma State Thursday in the opening round of Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships singles main draw action.

Ranked third and seeded second, Perez-Somarriba rebounded after dropping a first-set tiebreaker, but came up short in her first three-set match of the fall in a 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 3-6 decision at the Riviera Tennis Club.

“There were some positives and some negatives to pull out of today’s match,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “There is no doubt in our minds that Estela will capitalize on them and she will take on the next challenge.”

Thursday’s first set against Stresnakova, the lone competitor to advance from pre-qualifying all the way to the main draw, marked the first time in Perez-Somarriba’s illustrious career she has dropped a tiebreaker.

Now out of the main draw, Perez-Somarriba will resume play Friday in the consolation draw. She has a bye in the opening round and will play either No. 14 Marie-Alexandre Leduc of Clemson or No. 28 Julia Rosenqvist at 7 p.m. ET in the quarterfinals.
