CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team’s first full day of competition this fall ended without an official defeat.
The lone loss came in a doubles match in which a Hurricane was partnered with a player from Michigan, so the result does not count towards the season ledger. The Hurricanes finished 2-0 in doubles and 4-0 in singles Friday, adding a fifth singles triumph via walkover to open the Miami Fall Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
“It was a good day. It was great to be out and be back on the courts,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “Uly didn’t get to play singles, but she did a great job in doubles; she was leading and Yuna was following. That was good to see. I’m happy for Yuna and Lucia to be out there. All [five players] did a great job.”
Miami got off to a strong start in doubles play to begin the day, with freshman Lucia Marzal Martinez and senior Daniella Roldan tallying a 6-1 victory over Pittsburgh’s Claudia Bartolome and Clara Lucas. The match, which came in the B Draw, was the first of Marzal Martinez’s career.
Senior Ana Madcur, playing with Michigan’s Lanie Van Linge, dropped a narrow 6-7 (3-7) decision to Alexa Bortles and Tereza Janatova of Ole Miss in the B Draw.
The final match to finish was a thriller, with junior Yuna Ito, in her Miami debut, and sophomore Ulyana Shirokova winning a lengthy tiebreaker over No. 38 Tsveta Dimitrova and Victoria Emma of Florida. The Miami pair staved off multiple match points in a tiebreaker, including coming back from a 4-6 deficit, to earn a 7-6 (11-9) victory in A Draw competition.
Roldan kept her stellar play going after doubles, notching a quality 6-4, 6-2 triumph over No. 53 Sabina Machalova of Ole Miss in A Draw competition.
“I’m excited for Dani’s work and work ethic,” Vallverdu said. “She is following up on a great summer and I’m excited that she’s finally recognizing that commitment will take her places. So, I’m happy she got to see that today.”
In her first singles match as a Hurricane, Ito registered a straight-set victory against Ole Miss’ Allie Sanford, 6-1, 6-3, in the B Draw.
Shirokova did not compete in singles and advanced via withdrawal, as her opponent, No. 122 Anna Vrbenska of Ole Miss, was sick.
Madcur opened her final collegiate campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Camila Moreno of Pittsburgh in a B Draw matchup.
Marzal Martinez, in her first singles match at Miami, logged the lone three-set triumph of the day for the Hurricanes, edging Pittsburgh’s Gabriela Rezende, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in the A Draw.
Action is set to resume Saturday at 9 a.m., with doubles matches again opening the day and singles competition following.
In main draw doubles play, Ito and Shirokova will take on Michigan’s Brienne Minor and Alyvia Jones, while Marzal Martinez and Roldan will meet the Wolverines’ Anca Craciun and Bella Lorenzini. Madcur and Van Linge square off against Pittsburgh’s Mariona Perez Noguera/Gabriela Rezende in consolation play.
In the Singles A Main Draw quarterfinals, Roldan faces Emma, Shirokova plays Pittsburgh’s Claudia Bartolome and Marzal Martinez plays No. 62 McCartney Kessler of Florida. In the Singles B Draw quarterfinals, Ito meets Craciun and Madcur takes on No. 68 Dimitrova.
