Soccer Begins Season at FAU

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team will travel to Boca Raton, Fla., Friday night as the team kicks off regular season play against Florida Atlantic.
 
The Hurricanes are set to play at 7 p.m., at FAU Stadium, in the first official Miami athletic event of the school year, regardless of sport.
 
Friday night’s matchup will mark the 15th time the Canes have faced the Owls, with Miami leading the overall series 8-6-0. The teams last met Sept. 4, 2016, with UM securing a 1-0 home victory. The Hurricanes are 11-8-1 all-time in season openers.
 
Miami enters the 2018 season under first-year head coach Sarah Barnes, returning 16 players from 2017 and adding 10 newcomers.
 
Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce is expected to make her 45th start Friday night, following a season in which she made a career-high 84 saves. Over the course of her collegiate career, the native of Shoreham, N.Y., has tallied 173 saves, 11 shutouts and a .772 save percentage. In 2016, Tullis-Joyce set a UM record for fewest goals allowed in a season (16).
 
On the offensive side of the ball, the Hurricanes return six starting forwards/midfielders from last season who accounted for 29 of the team’s 51 points. Junior midfielder Kristina Fisher leads all returning players with nine points (two goals, five assists) and has started all 35 games since joining the team.
 
Florida Atlantic posted an 11-8-2 (5-4-1 CUSA) record during the 2017 season.

After taking on Florida Atlantic, Miami will return to Cobb Stadium for the season’s home opener against FIU, Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
