Golf Finishes 15th at NCAA Regional

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Miami women’s golf team concluded its 2017-18 season Wednesday with a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Austin Regional, hosted at the par-72, 6,341-yard University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas. Miami shot a 22-over-par 310 as a team in the final round and wrapped up the 54-hole tournament with a score of 914 (+50).

Miami had just four healthy players available Wednesday, so each of their scores counted toward the team score. UM’s No. 3 player, Kristyna Frydlova, was forced to withdraw because of illness for the second straight day.

“It was a disappointing week for us,” Miami head coach Patti Rizzo said. “We had a couple of players sick and the team seemed to lack energy. It was a long year and a decent season, not as good as I would have hoped for, but I’m looking forward to next fall. The next couple of years look very promising. We have some talented recruits coming in, and we are very excited about our future.”

Renate Grimstad carded a 1-over-par 73 Wednesday and led Miami in the tournament with a 3-over 219. She tied for 24th place overall. Grimstad recorded five birdies Wednesday – most of any UM player in a round during the regional.

Dewi Weber paced Miami with an even-par 72 in the final round, her 14th round of par or lower in 29 rounds this year. She finished 34th overall with a 5-over 221. The All-ACC honoree concluded her season with a 72.0 stroke average, one of the lowest in a season in program history.

Macarena Aguilera recorded an 8-over 80 and tied for 78th place at 21-over (235). Roos Haarman carded an 85 for Miami’s fourth score. She finished 88th with a 246.

Miami made its sixth straight trip to an NCAA Regional under Rizzo. The top six teams in the regional and top three individuals not on those teams advanced to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
