Men's Tennis Falls to No. 7 UNC on Senior Day

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped its final Atlantic Coast Conference contest of the season, 4-0, to No. 7 North Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Following a four-hour rain delay, the match began with singles play. The Tar Heels (20-4, 11-1 ACC) won the first four matches to hand the Hurricanes (13-11, 4-8 ACC) their second home defeat of the season. Both of Miami’s home losses this season came against top-10 opposition.

The No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches were abandoned following the clinch.

Blaine Boyden clinched the victory for North Carolina at No. 5, defeating senior Niclas Genovese, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. The first-set tiebreaker was tied at 4 before Boyden, now 20-1 on the season, closed the set with three straight points.

Mac Kiger got the Tar Heels, who secured the second seed in the ACC Championship with the victory, going on the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the all-freshman matchup at the bottom of the lineup.

UNC’s other victories came in the ranked matchups at the top two spots. First, No. 38 Benjamin Sigouin defeated No. 123 senior Christian Langmo, 7-5, 6-3, to double the Heels’ lead before No. 2 William Blumberg bested No. 108 freshman Adria Soriano in a three-setter, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, to triple it.

Miami freshman Bojan Jankulovski was on his way to his 19th singles victory of the season, leading Simon Soendergaard minimally in the third set, 6-3, 2-6, 2-1.

On the adjacent court, No. 87 Robert Kelly had just evened up the No. 4 matchup against redshirt sophomore Dane Dunlap, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6.

Senior Day for Langmo, Genovese and Nile Clark continues tonight at 6 p.m. when the Hurricanes will host Dayton in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
