Shakima Wimbley Wins Silver Medal at IAAF World Championships
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – One day after Murielle Ahoure won a gold medal in the 60m, Shakima Wimbley became the second Hurricane to earn a medal at the IAAF World Championships.
The former Miami star took home the silver medal in the women’s 400m final, posting a time of 51.47 seconds to finish behind her teammate from the United States, Courtney Okolo.
Wimbley’s path to a silver medal began Friday, as the 2017 NCAA indoor 400m champion won Heat 4 of the opening round of competition with a time of 52.43 seconds to advance to the semifinals. She earned a spot in Saturday’s final after she won semifinal 1 of the women’s 400m on Friday night with a time of 51.34 seconds.
The silver medal is Wimbley’s first individual medal at an IAAF World Championships. A year ago, Wimbley won gold at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships as part of the United States’ 4x400m relay team.
One of the best Hurricanes’ sprinters ever, Wimbley rewrote the record books at Miami and in the ACC. The superstar closed her ACC career with eight 200m titles, seven 400m titles, three 4x100m titles and five 4x400m titles. She also has six school records, four ACC records and six ACC Championship records while leading Miami to back-to-back ACC indoor championships. In addition to her indoor national title, she was the NCAA runner-up in the outdoor 400m in 2017 and earned eight First Team All-America honors as a Hurricane.
The IAAF World Championships are held at Arena Birmingham, a multi-purpose venue that has hosted more world championships than any other arena in Europe, and more than 30 different sports events in its history, including multiple global events such as the Indoor Grand Prix and the IAAF World Indoor Championships 2003.
