Davenport on Katrina McClain Award Watch List
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Erykah Davenport of the University of Miami women’s basketball team was among the 20 selections for the Katrina McClain Award Watch List.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced the picks Thursday afternoon.
Named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year, the annual Katrina McClain Award in its inaugural year recognizes the top power forwards in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball.
A senior forward/center, Davenport has logged 51 starts as a Hurricane and the next game she plays in will be her 100th. Last season, Davenport averaged 6.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest, ranking fifth and second among Hurricanes, respectively.
The Decatur, Ga., native also led Miami with a 56.5 percent field goal percentage in 2016-17, placed second in blocks with 23 and finished third in steals with 1.4 per game. She posted a pair of double-doubles and scored in double figures nine times.
Davenport is one of three ACC players on the Katrina McClain Award Watch List, along with Louisville senior Myisha Hines-Allen and Duke sophomore Leanna Odom.
The Selection Committee for the Katrina McClain Award is composed of top women’s college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2018 Katrina McClain Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. McClain-Pittman and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalist at www.hoophallawards.com.
The winner of the 2018 Katrina McClain Power Forward Award will be announced during ESPN2’s telecast of the national semifinal games in the 2018 NCAA Women’s Final Four on March 30.
