PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team completed its participation at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships Friday after going 1-2 on the day.

The Hurricanes’ win came from sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba, who started the day strong and took down ninth-ranked Alizee Michaud of Auburn, 6-4, 6-1, for the second top-10 win of her career.

In the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, No. 11 Perez-Somarriba fought back from a set behind against No. 71 Marianna Petrei of Idaho, but could not continue her run in the competition, dropping a 2-6, 6-4, 4-6 decision.

Eighth-ranked and seventh-seeded Sinead Lohan, who was the only Hurricane remaining in the main draw, dropped her match in the Round of 16 in a similar manner. The senior forced a third set after breaking No. 25 Jessica Livianu’s serve for 7-5 in the second set.

However, the St. John’s representative prevailed 6-2 in the third set to move on to the quarterfinals with a 7-1, 5-7, 6-2 victory. Thus, Lohan could not repeat her achievement from her previous trip west this fall, when she won the title at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

“Both Sinead and Estela played tennis today, but lacked precision and some decisiveness in key moments,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “It’s all part of this sport. They have to continue working to be more emotionally effiecient and take the right chances.”

After approximately 10 days of rest, Perez-Somarriba, Lohan and the rest of the Canes will return to action at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Presented by Oracle, held Oct. 19-23 in Atlanta and hosted by Georgia Tech.
