NBA Summer League Las Vegas Updates

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Making his first career start as a professional, former University of Miami basketball player Davon Reed continued to put on a show in Las Vegas.

Reed opened the game firing on all cylinders by knocking down a pair of 3-pointers, on his way to eight points midway through the first quarter.

In the closing seconds of the third quarter, Reed made a move past his defender at the edge of the arc and finished strong at the basket to create an and-1 opportunity. For the game Reed shot a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe, while recording 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 29 minutes of action.

Over the course of the Phoenix Suns six games in Las Vegas, Reed averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals.

Earlier in the day, the Washington Wizards and Sheldon Mac battled the Minnesota Timberwolves. With a limited amount of minutes, Mac made the most of his opportunities, knocking down both of his shot attempts from beyond the arc. He finished the afternoon with six points, three rebounds and an assist.

Quarterfinal action will begin Saturday with Trey McKinney Jones and the Miami Heat taking on the Memphis Grizzlies at 6 p.m. ET, live on ESPN2. In the final game of the evening, Kamari Murphy and the Brooklyn Nets will battle the Los Angeles Lakers at 10 p.m. ET, live on ESPNU.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Former University of Miami basketball player Kamari Murphy and the Brooklyn Nets took down the Denver Nuggets Thursday evening, 85-74.

Murphy took over on the defensive side of the ball, pulling down five rebounds, as the Nets advanced to the Las Vegas quarterfinals and will await the winner of Thursday night’s late game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Davon Reed and the Phoenix Suns battled the Memphis Grizzlies with the winner set to face the Miami Heat in the quarterfinals. Finishing the afternoon with 13 points and a pair of made shots from beyond the arc, it was not enough as the Suns came up short, 102-98.

The quarterfinals will be played on Saturday with tip times to be announced following the conclusion of Thursday night’s contests. On Friday, Sheldon Mac and the Washington Wizards will face the Minnesota Timberwolves at 4:30 p.m. ET, live on NBATV. Then at 10 p.m. ET, Reed and the Suns will take on the Sacramento Kings.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. A trio of University of Miami Pro Canes battled it out on the hardwood, Wednesday night, in the opening round of the Las Vegas Summer League playoffs.

For the second time in three nights, Trey McKinney Jones and the Miami Heat took on Sheldon Mac and the Washington Wizards. Once again finding himself in the starting lineup, McKinney Jones tallied 8 points, 3 rebounds and an assist as the Heat sneaked past the Wizards, 89-88.

Mac wrapped up Summer League play with a 13 point outing, knocking down both of his shot attempts from beyond the arc.

In the second game of a Pro Canes double-header, Davon Reed continued to impress on both sides of the court for the Phoenix Suns.

For the fourth consecutive game Reed capped off the evening with double-digit points, scoring 15, as the Suns scorched the Utah Jazz, 97-81. Knocking down a pair of three-pointers, Reed also recorded five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block in 32 minutes of action.

Thursday night, McKinney Jones and the Heat will battle the Los Angeles Clippers at 6:30 p.m. ET, on ESPN2 in the second round of the playoffs, while Davon Reed and the Suns will take on the Memphis Grizzlies at 8 p.m. ET, on NBATV. After receiving a first round bye, Kamari Murphy and the Brooklyn Nets will face off against the Denver Nuggets at 4:30 p.m. ET, on ESPN2.

Shooting an efficient 72.7-percent (8-of-11) from the field and swiping away a pair of steals, leading to points at the other end, Mac finished the afternoon with a team-high 20 points. However, it was not enough to take down the Chicago Bulls.

In the second game highlighting Pro Canes, Trey McKinney Jones recorded seven points, six rebounds and three assists against the Dallas Mavericks.

Following the conclusion of Tuesday’s slate of games, the seedlings for the Las Vegas playoff bracket have been finalized. Mac and the Wizards will face off against McKinney Jones and the Wizards for the second time in three nights, Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET. At 8 p.m., Davon Reed and the Phoenix Suns will take on the Utah Jazz.

Kamari Murphy and the Brooklyn Nets have received a first round bye, and will await the winner of the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets first round matchup.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. A pair of former University if Miami basketball players hit the courts in Las Vegas in a battle of Pro Canes.

Both players found themselves in the starting lineups as Sheldon Mac suited up for the Washington Wizards and Trey McKinney Jones sported his Miami Heat jersey.

In a back-and-forth game, Mac led all scorers with 18 points, while posting four rebounds, an assist and a steal. But in the end it was McKinney Jones and the Heat who were able to pull away in the closing minutes.

With 30 seconds remaining, McKinney Jones grabbed a defensive rebound before knocking down a pair of free-throws on the other end. Moments later he found his open teammate, Matt Williams, who knocked down the mid-range jumper. Overall, McKinney Jones finished the afternoon with 15 points, two assists and a pair of rebounds, as the Heat knocked off the Wizards, 91-87.

Mac and the Wizards will look to bounce back tomorrow against the Chicago Bulls, live on NBATV at 6 p.m. ET. Later in the evening, McKinney Jones and the Heat will look to improve to 3-0, when they take on the Dallas Mavericks at 8 p.m. ET, also live on NBATV.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Coming off of the bench for the second consecutive game for the Phoenix Suns, former University of Miami basketball player Davon Reed continued to make a strong impression in Las Vegas.

With less than 20 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Reed made a move past Ding Yanyuhang and finished strong at the basket for the and-1, his first points of the game.

As the second quarter got underway, Suns head coach Earl Watson joined ESPN play-by-play announcers Mike Breen and Seth Greenberg and said, “That is a great comparison [Malcolm Brogdon], with a four-year player who’s willing to shoot the ball from beyond the three. But at the same time [Reed] brings great stability defensively and is a great compliment to Devin Booker.”

Nearly doubling his time on the court from the opening Summer League game, Reed finished the afternoon with 11 points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists in 32 minutes of action. Although it was not enough to take down the Dallas Mavericks.

In the first game, Sheldon Mac and the Washington Wizards opened up Summer League play against the Memphis Grizzlies.

In a game that came down to the final seconds, Mac finished the afternoon with nine points and a pair of assists on the offensive end, while recording five rebounds, a block and a steal on defense. However, it was not enough as the Grizzlies converted a three-point play with two seconds remaining in regulation, to steal the game from the Wizards.

Later in the evening, Trey McKinney Jones suited up for his second team of the summer. Finding himself in the starting lineup for the Miami Heat against the San Antonio Spurs, McKinney Jones grabbed five rebounds and scored seven points as the Heat took down the Spurs, 75-74.

Both Mac and McKinney Jones will return to the hardwood Monday in a battle between Pro Canes, as the Wizards and Heat face off against one another at 4:30 p.m. ET. Be sure to catch all the action live on NBATV.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After signing a four-year contract with the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, former University of Miami basketball player Davon Reed put on a show in Las Vegas as the Suns took down the Sacramento Kings, 89-85.

In his first-career Summer League game, the 32nd overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft knocked down his first shot attempt from 18-feet out. On the following possession, with time running out in the first quarter, Reed pulled up from 3-point range to even the score at 22-apiece.

In 20 minutes, the 6-foot-6-inch guard poured in 17 points, to go along with a pair of steals and rebounds.

Midway through the third quarter Devin Booker spoke with the play-by-play announcers, Mark Jones and P.J. Carlesimo, about his future Suns teammates and said, “No surprise in Davon Reed, our second round pick, tonight. He played really well in practice yesterday. He defends, he shoots the ball well and he just does what he has to do.”

Shooting an efficient 54.5-percent (6-of-11) from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe, Reed will return to the hardwood on Sunday when the Suns take on the Dallas Mavericks at 4:30 p.m. ET, on ESPN.
