PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – The No. 19-ranked University of Miami women’s golf team wasted little time in establishing its presence at the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Thursday as it posted a team score of 285 to earn a second-place standing during Day 1 competition.

Miami was consistent throughout the day, as Hurricane individuals posted 14 birdies. The Hurricanes enter Day 2 competition just one stroke behind tournament leader Duke, which fired an opening round 284.

The three-day event is being held at the Reserve Golf Club of Pawleys Island on the par 72, 6,186-yard, Beach Course.

Freshman Renate Grimstad tied for the team lead with four birdies on the day and is tied for third to lead all Hurricane individuals, after she fired an opening round 69.

Grimstad’s opening round 69 marked the third time this season she has shot under 70. Grimstad stumbled out of the gate as she carded a bogey on hole No. 2, but bounced back with a birdie on hole No. 3. She would then post six straight pars to close out the front nine with an even par 36.

On the back nine, Grimstad birdied three of the first five holes and closed three-under-par.

Senior Delfina Acosta also carded four birdies on the day and finished Round 1, two-under-par (70). She is currently tied for sixth.

The Argentina native opened competition by shooting an even par 36 on the front nine. On the back nine, Acosta bogeyed hole No. 11, but responded in a big way as she tallied birdies on three of the next four holes to move to two-under-par. She then proceeded to par the final three holes before going into the clubhouse.

Sophomore Dewi Weber was equally impressive during Day 1 competition, as she also tallied a two-under-par score of 70 and is tied for sixth.

Weber began the day on a high note as she birdied each of the first three holes. She then would go on to par 14 of the next 15 holes.

Miami freshmen Filippa Moork and Macarena Aguilera posted rounds of 76 (tied for 37th) and 78 (tied for 47th) to round out the Hurricanes’ top five.

Duke’s Leona Maguire and North Carolina’s Bryana Nguyen are tied for the individual lead (68).
