@CanesWTennis Drops 4-3 Decision at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. The University of Miami women’s tennis team fell to Syracuse, 4-3, Sunday at the Drumlins Tennis Center.

No. 42 Miami came up short in the doubles point and was unable to mount a comeback, falling to the Orange for the first time in program history.

“We didn’t lose this match due to injury or adversity,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We were simply outworked and that’s tough for me to stomach.”

Syracuse (7-10, 4-6 ACC) took the first match in doubles, as Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez downed junior Sinead Lohan and freshman Dominika Paterova, 6-3.

Sophomore Ana Madcur and freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba then notched a 6-3 win against Anna Shkudun and Dina Hegab to level the doubles tally.

The final doubles match was even at five before Maria Tritou and Nicole Mitchell took the final two games, topping freshman Sara Culbertson and junior Silvia Fuentes, 7-5, to give the Orange the opening point.

In singles, Knutson defeated No. 14 Lohan, 6-4, 6-2, to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead. For Lohan, the decision marked the first time in her career she has dropped a spring singles match to an unranked opponent.

Moments later, Madcur took down Hegab, 6-1, 6-2 to put Miami (6-10, 4-6 ACC) on the board and trim the deficit back to one.

Libi Mesh pushed the Orange lead to 3-1 by taking down Culbertson, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Tritou then clinched the match for Syracuse by defeating Fuentes, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The final two matches were played out, including one between No. 42 Perez-Somarriba and No. 79 Ramirez in a top-100 affair.

Perez-Somarriba found herself facing a 0-6, 2-5 deficit, but rallied back to force a second-set tiebreaker, which she won, 9-7. The native of Madrid  completed the comeback in the final set to earn a 0-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 victory.

The Hurricanes closed the match with a victory when Paterova defeated Shkudun, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, making the final score 4-3.

Miami will be back in action on its home court Friday at 2 p.m., when it faces Clemson at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
