MERCER COUNTY, N.J. — The University of Miami rowing team battled challenging weather conditions on the opening day at the Knecht Cup.
The Hurricanes have four boats scheduled to compete over the two-day regatta on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J., but only two were able to race due to significant delays throughout the day.
The women’s varsity four was the first boat in the water for Miami on Saturday morning, finishing fifth in Heat 5 with a time of 8:10.49. The Hurricanes advanced to the semi-final based on having one of the five fastest times that did not earn an automatic qualifier spot.
Miami’s varsity eight also earned a spot in the semi-finals after it won Heat 5 of its preliminaries with a time of 6:50.19.
The Canes’ 2V8+ will race in Heat 2 of its event, beginning Sunday at 7:06 a.m. The top four boats in each heat plus the next five fastest times will advance to the semi-final.
Miami’s novice will run out of Lane 1 in Heat 2 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Heat winners plus the next four fastest times will move on to the final.
Following this weekend’s action at the Knecht Cup, the Canes will head to Orlando, Fla., to race against UCF in their final regatta before the ACC Rowing Championship. For a complete look at Miami’s schedule, click here.
