@CanesWTennis Drops Road Match at BC

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. The University of Miami women’s tennis team fell to Boston College, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Flynn Recreational Complex.

Playing the match without junior Sinead Lohan, the No. 11-ranked player in the nation, No. 37 Miami came up just short in the doubles point and was unable to mount a comeback, falling to the Eagles for the first time in 24 meetings.

Boston College (8-7, 3-4 ACC) took the first match in doubles, as Dasha Possokhova and Kylie Wilcox downed redshirt senior Maci Epstein and freshman Dominika Paterova, 6-3.

Sophomore Ana Madcur and freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba then notched a 6-3 win against Lexi Borr and Emily Safron to level the doubles tally.

The final doubles match came down to a 14-point tiebreaker, with Asiya Dair and Elene Tsokilauri topping freshman Sara Culbertson and junior Silvia Fuentes, 7-6 (8-6), to give the Eagles the opening point.

Possokhova defeated Epstein, 6-4, 6-0, to give Boston College a 2-0 lead. Seconds later, No. 33 Perez-Somarriba concluded her first-career match at the No. 1 position in dominant fashion to put Miami (4-8, 3-4 ACC) on the board.

The freshman won each of her first 10 games, en route to an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory against Dair, who finished last season ranked No. 74 in the country.

Borr pushed the Eagles’ lead to 3-1 by taking down Paterova, 6-4, 6-4. Wilcox then clinched the match for Boston College by edging Madcur, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

The final two matches were played out, with Tsokilauri beating Culbertson, 6-2, 6-1, and Safron winning against Fuentes, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

For Miami, the defeat marked its first versus an opponent not ranked in the top 50 since dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 73 Florida State in the ACC Championship quarterfinals on April 24, 2015.

The Hurricanes return to action Sunday when they take on No. 26 Notre Dame at noon in Notre Dame, Ind.
