@CanesTrack Announces 2017 Schedule
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem announced the University of Miami 2017 track and field schedule.
The Hurricanes’ schedule is highlighted by trips to the Meyo Invitational and Michael Johnson Invitational, as well as appearances at the ACC and NCAA Championships for both indoor and outdoor track and field.
“We always look at a couple things when we are putting together a schedule,” Deem said. “One is quality competition at quality sites and the other is to expose our student-athletes to different situations each year. We’re going to Baylor and going to Notre Dame and doing some things a little bit differently this year just to give our athletes a little bit different experience, but also see quality competition in preparation for a great indoor and outdoor season.”
Miami’s indoor season kicks off Jan. 13-14 with a trip to the Virginia Tech Invitational. A week later, the Canes will compete at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet in Lexington, Ky. (Jan. 20-21).
The Hurricanes will be in action at the 2017 Meyo Invitational on Feb. 3-4 and have a trip to Clemson (Feb. 10-11) in preparation for the ACC Championships at Notre Dame from Feb. 23-25. Two weeks later, the Canes will be in College Station, Texas for the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships.
“Our indoor schedule this year is a little bit different,” Deem said. “We chose to compete at some different venues that we feel will allow us to better prepare for our indoor goals, which include success at the ACC and NCAA Championships. We feel like we have some quality meets and it will be good to return to Virginia Tech and compete at the Meyo Invitational, which will allow us to compete at the facility where we will compete in the ACC Indoor Championships later that month.”
Miami opens its outdoor season with the first of three home meets, hosting the Hurricane Invitational from March 17-18. The following week, the Canes will host the Hurricane Twilight meet on March 25. Miami will also host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 7-8, a meet that Deem always enjoys to host because it brings together Canes of past and present.
“I am really looking forward to our home meet schedule this year,” Deem said. “The opportunity to compete at home three weekends is exciting for our team, the University and our fans. This is one of our more competitive home meet schedules. I am looking forward to teams like Kansas State, the University of Florida and Virginia coming to Coral Gables.”
The Canes will head to Gainesville, Fla., twice in 2017: first for the 78th Florida Relay on March 30-April 1 and again on April 28 for the Tom Jones Invitational. Between two trips to compete at the University of Florida, the Hurricanes will travel to Waco, Texas, for the Michael Johnson Invitational at Baylor.
Miami will head to Atlanta to compete against its fellow ACC member schools at the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships from May 12-14, hosted by Georgia Tech.
Two weeks after ACCs, the Canes will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary in Lexington, Ky., from May 25-27. The top Miami performers will look to advance to the NCAA Championships, held in Eugene, Ore., from June 7-10.
