Lohan Tops Asatrian at USTA/ITA National Indoors

FLUSHING, N.Y. Sinead Lohan of the University of Miami women’s tennis team got back on the winning track Friday at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.

The junior fought through a close first set and then dominated the second to notch a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 triumph over Rima Asatrian of Columbia at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center.

“I am glad to see some minor changes in Sinead approach to the match today,” Miami associate head Laura Vallverdu said. “She has to be ready for a good start, a disciplined middle and a brave end. She has to continue to build the habit of winning and respecting every point regardless of the score.”

For Lohan, the win was her second over Asatrian in the past eight months, joining a 6-0, 6-3 victory at home in Coral Gables, Fla., in March.

With the victory, Lohan remains undefeated in singles in her career against unranked non-Miami opponents. She is now 44-0 in such matches over her two-plus seasons as a Hurricane.

Saturday at 9 a.m., in the back draw quarterfinals, Lohan will take on No. 41 Kate Fahey of Michigan. The two met under three weeks ago at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., with Lohan posting a 6-3, 6-2 triumph.

The winner of that match will then play either ninth-ranked Belinda Woolcock of Florida or Jessica Livianu of St. John’s at 1 p.m., in the semifinals with a berth in the back draw championship on the line.
