AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Dewi Weber posted a record-setting day on Monday as she paced the ninth-ranked University of Miami women’s golf team to the top spot of the standings during the first day of competition at the 2016 Betsy Rawls Invitational.

Weber currently leads the field after she finished the day with a school record two-round total of 129 (15-under-par). She stands 10 strokes ahead of Kent State’s Michaela Finn.

The Netherlands native was locked in from the moment she stepped on the course as she posted a school record 64 in the first round, tallying 10 birdies. Weber’s back nine was especially impressive in round one as she carded six-consecutive birdies en route to finishing with a 31.

Weber continued her strong play in the second round as she did not record a single bogey and closed with a 65. She finished the day with 17 birdies.

“Dewi is very competitive,” said head coach Patti Rizzo. “She’s very confident, she’s fearless and she just plays really aggressive. This is not a very easy course. The rough is deep and it is long, but Dewi is making it look like a pitch a putt.”

As a team, the Hurricanes tallied a total of 570 and lead second place Kent State by eight strokes.

“As a coach, it’s just fun to sit back and watch,” Rizzo said. “It really was fun today. Today’s round is something that you dream about.”

Freshman Filippa Moork also turned in a strong performance on Monday as she posted back-to-back rounds of 71 and is tied for third (142).

“The thing that’s great about this team is that any one of our players are capable of going out and shooting in the 60’s,” Rizzo said.

Fellow Hurricane rookie Renate Grimstad is also ranked in the top 25 as she carded a two-round total of 149 and is tied for 20th. Grimstad recorded an opening round score of 75 and then closed with a 74.

The two-day event is being at the par 72, 6,278-yard University of Texas Golf Club.

Final round action begins on Tuesday 9:45 a.m. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at BirdieFire.com.
