@CanesWTennis Finishes Bedford Cup at 10-2 Overall
TAMPA, Fla. – All four members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team competing in the Bedford Cup ended their weekends with straight-set victories Sunday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
Freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba and sophomore Ana Madcur both earned wins in the championship matches of their singles flight and went 3-0 in Tampa. As a whole, Miami was 10-2 over the course of the three-day tournament.
“This was a very nice weekend for the University of Miami women’s tennis team,” Miami volunteer assistant coach Sergio Velez Angel said. “I think the maturity that we saw from our upperclassmen, Ana and Clara [Tanielian], it really showed that we can achieve big things and aim for a big season . . . As I told the girls before we went back onto the road, the team bonding that we were able to experience these three days was amazing.”
The day began with a pair of Hurricanes competing in consolation matches. Tanielian, a sophomore, topped FGCU’s Breana Stampfli, 6-2, 6-4, and freshman Dominika Paterova earned a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Cortney Cesarini of UCF.
In the Steffi Graf Flight final, Perez-Somarriba rolled past FIU’s Andrea Lazaro, 6-4, 6-2, to cap her first-career tournament-style event with a title.
“Estela played unbelievable tennis. She played very solidly,” Velez Angel said of the freshman’s showing at the Bedford Cup. “She played big on the big points and that’s going to be very, very helpful.”
Madcur, ranked No. 117, cruised by Maryna Veklser of FIU, 6-1, 6-2, to win the championship of the Billie Jean King Flight.
Miami will return to action Tuesday, with redshirt sophomore Yolimar Ogando taking the court as qualifying singles action at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships begins in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
