@CanesWTennis Posts 4-0 Mark to Open Bedford Cup

TAMPA, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team started play at the Bedford Cup Friday in dominant fashion, winning all of its first round matches at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.

Sophomore Clara Tanielian, freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba, sophomore Ana Madcur and freshman Dominika Paterova all picked up straight-set victories to begin tournament play.

“Good, solid first day for us here at USF,” Miami volunteer assistant coach Sergio Velez Angel said. “Watching our freshmen compete away [from Miami] for the first time was very exciting. Overall, everyone had a complete day of tennis.”

Sophomore Clara Tanielian opened play for the Hurricanes with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Stetson’s Sofia Ferding in the opening round of the Angelique Kerber Flight. She will face Mina Markovic of FIU in the semifinals Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba then continued the strong start to her Miami career with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Vera Bessanova of USF in the first round of the Steffi Graf Flight. In the semifinals, she will take on FGCU’s Breana Stampfli at 10:30 a.m., Saturday morning.

Sophomore Ana Madcur, ranked No. 117, took down FGCU’s Julia Ascua, 6-4, 6-4, in round one of the Billie Jean King Flight. Her semifiinal match will be Saturday at 1 p.m., against Jessica Cortes Chaves of USF.

Finally, freshman Dominka Paterova rolled past Olivia Rolle of Florida A&M, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round of the Lindsay Davenport Flight. She is set to play USF’s Vanja Klaric at 3 p.m., Saturday in the semifinals.

“We certainly need to improve tomorrow on certain things, but the girls are listening and doing it when it counts,” Velez Angel said. “We are looking forward to day two and getting better as a team.”
