Ogando Closes Strong at Duke Bonk Invitational

CARY, N.C. The University of Miami women’s tennis team concluded play at the Duke Bonk Invitational Sunday with a consolation winner and a main draw runner-up.

Redshirt sophomore Yolimar Ogando topped Furman’s Katarina Weywouth, 6-3, 6-4, to win the Black Singles Consolation Draw at Cary Tennis Park. Redshirt senior Maci Epstein dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to No. 89 Josie Kuhlman of Florida in the Blue Singles Main Draw final.

“We have to expand our ideas of the game and continue to grow throughout this entire fall semester,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “The team is willing to work and listen. That’s all we can as for as coaches. Changes have to be made, but that’s the reason we do what we do. I’m happy to have Ogando back with us in a competitive situation. She loves it.”

Both junior Silvia Fuentes and sophomore Ana Madcur, ranked No. 117, fell short in the finals of their respective consolation draws.

In the championship of the Blue Singles Consolation Draw, Fuentes fell to VCU’s Janina Braun, 6-3, 6-4. After winning the opening set of the Yellow Singles Consolation Draw finale, Madcur dropped the last two against Anna Rasmussen of NC State, who earned a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.

Overall, Miami finished the three-day Duke Bonk Invitational with a 9-9 record, including a 6-6 singles mark.

The Hurricanes will return to action next weekend when the team hosts the Miami Fall Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center from Sept. 23-25.
