All-American Monday - Carl Sundberg

Carl Sundberg (2008)

Born in Oslo, Norway, Carl Sundberg came to the Coral Gables campus as the former No. 1 ranked player in Norway in the 14s, 16s, and 18s singles division, an ITF champion of a grade 5 event, and winner of 13 Norwegian national championships. Posting an 18-13 record in singles play, Sundberg earned five wins over ACC opponents knocking off nationally-ranked opponents from Georgia Tech, Clemson, NC State, Wake Forest, and Boston College. In the ACC tournament, Sundberg defeated No. 11 North Carolina’s Clay Donato and No. 10 Florida State’s Maciek Sykut. Teaming primarily with Daniel Vallverdu, Sundberg compiled a 25-9 overall record. The tandem, who were ranked as high as third in the nation, picked up eight wins over ranked opponents. Seeded third in the NCAA Doubles Tournament, the pair advanced to the NCAA’s Round of 16 after defeating TCU’s 50th-ranked duo of Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. For his success in doubles completion, Sundberg was elected to the 2008 All-American team.

Building upon his freshman single season success, Sundberg went on to post a 20-7 singles season mark. Playing in the No. 4 position, Sundberg posted a perfect 6-0 mark and a 9-2 mark while playing out of the No. 5 position. Nationally ranked throughout most of the season and peaking at No. 78, Sundberg collected victories in both his matches against ranked opponents. Based on their success from the previous season, Sundberg and Vallverdu entered the fall ranked No. 1 in the nation. Overall, Sundberg compiled a 14-14 doubles record including a 7-4 mark against the ACC.

Despite the drop-off in singles victories, 20 in his sophomore season to 13 in his junior season, Sundberg still performed well and defeated quality opponents (No. 37 Alex Musialek of No. 9 Kentucky and Joshua Graves of No. 36 Northwestern).  For the third consecutive season, Sundberg collected 14-plus victories in doubles competition. Pairing with Ignacio Taboada, the duo went 6-4 overall, winning four of their last five matches versus ACC competition.

For the third time in his four years as a Hurricane, Sundberg compiled 18-plus wins. Posting a 20-11 overall singles mark, his second 20 win season, Sundberg recorded a team best 9-2 mark in ACC play, a perfect record of 4-0 out of the No. 3 position, and won eight consecutive matches to finish the regular season. Included in those eight straight wins were straight set victories over No. 19 North Carolina’s 90th-ranked Joey Burkhardt (6-2, 6-2) and No. 10 Duke’s Fred Saba (6-3, 6-3). Partnering primarily with Christian Blöcker, Sundberg compiled a 12-15 mark in doubles competition. The duo went 7-4 in ACC play and won three of four matches at the UM Invitational.

Sundberg closed out his collegiate career with 64 doubles victories and 71 singles victories ranking him  eighth and 12th, respectively, in Miami history. Sundberg who graduated from the University of Miami in May 2011 with a business degree, was a two-time UM Book Buster (3.0 GPA or higher) and was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.2 GPA or higher).
