ATLANTA – No. 4 Miami dropped its series opener with host Georgia Tech Saturday night, falling 12-1 to the Yellow Jackets at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Tech (31-14, 11-10 ACC) scored three runs in the second inning to take an early lead, and extended their advantage with a three-run fifth. The hosts then scored five runs over the next two innings to put the game away.

Miami (34-9, 14-6 ACC) looked poised to open the scoring in the first when junior Johnny Ruiz slapped a two-on, two-out single to left field. But junior Zack Collins, who drew a walk earlier in the inning, was thrown out at home by Matt Gonzalez to end the inning.

Trailing 3-0 in the third after a two-RBI single by Jackets shortstop Connor Justus and a rare infield error, Miami loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch from sophomore Carl Chester, a single from Collins and a walk from senior Brandon Lopez.

But Yellow Jackets ace Brandon Gold induced a flyout to left to strand the bases loaded and keep the Jackets ahead.

Hurricanes lefthander Thomas Woodrey (5-4) allowed six runs on a career high-tying 11 hits. He struck out five batters and walked three before being relieved by redshirt freshman Keven Pimentel in the sixth.

Lopez reached base for the 27th straight game with a first-inning single that extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Gold pitched seven shutout innings, allowing six hits with four strikeouts.

Freshman Romy Gonzalez put Miami on the board with his first career home run in the ninth. Gonzalez connected on a one-out solo blast off Bobby Gauvreau.

The Hurricanes return to Russ Chandler Stadium Sunday for the second game in the weekend series. First pitch for the contest, slated for broadcast on WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 4 p.m.
