CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will begin play in the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championship Friday afternoon. It is the 12th-straight year the Hurricanes have made the field and the 16th time overall.
Held at Neilsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., Miami (3-0, 1-0 ACC) is one of 16 teams competing to win the national indoor title. The Hurricanes are one of eight seeded teams in the tournament, earning the seventh position.
The field includes 14 of the top 18 teams in the Oracle/ITA national team rankings, including four from the ACC, the second-most of any conference. Each team is guaranteed a match Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the two teams that advance to the championship playing a fourth match Monday.
“We are ready to open up play with Michigan Friday,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “The players seem relaxed and ready to engage for an incredible weekend of tennis.”
Miami, ranked No. 11, faces the 12th-ranked Wolverines Friday at 1 p.m. Michigan (2-1), unseeded in the field, is coached by Ronni Bernstein, née Reis, who was an eight-time All-American as a player at Miami and won the 1986 NCAA Doubles Championship.
The Hurricanes enter the tournament with a trio of top-25 singles players in sophomore Sinead Lohan (No. 7), senior Stephanie Wagner (No. 9) and sophomore Yolimar Ogando (No. 21), who is currently out due to injury. Sophomore Wendy Zhang holds the No. 80 position in the country, while Wagner and senior Clementina Riobueno form the nation’s No. 22 doubles pair.
Michigan’s Ronit Yurovsky is ranked No. 17 in singles and she is followed by Brienne Minor at No. 19 and Kate Fahey at No. 107. Minor and Fahey are also ranked as the No. 59 doubles duo in the country.
