Miami Posts 14-5 Mark Friday at SE Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. A quartet of University of Miami women’s tennis players won two singles matches Friday at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals Friday to advance to the round of 16.

Additionally, three of Miami’s four doubles pairs earned victories at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to make the round of 16, too. Overall, the Hurricanes went 14-5 on the first day of main draw play.

“Pretty good showing today from our ladies,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We were methodical in most situations and came up with some big wins.”

The Hurricanes opened the day by going 3-1 in the first round of doubles action. Freshman Clara Tanielian and senior Stephanie Wagner played a barnburner, earning a thrilling 8-7 (11-9) victory over Rasheeda McAdoo and Johnnise Renaud of Georgia Tech.

Senior Clementina Riobueno and sophomore Wendy Zhang, ranked No. 50 and seeded fourth, also beat a pair of Yellow Jackets, downing Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and Megan Kurey, 8-6. Sophomore Sinead Lohan and freshman Ana Madcur defeated Georgia State’s Kristin Rehse and Chiara Volejnicek, 8-2.

Sophomores Silvia Fuentes and Yolimar Ogando came up just short against Florida’s Spencer Liang and Peggy Porter, who are ranked No. 55 and seeded seventh, as the Gator duo pulled out a narrow win, 8-6.

Miami earned seven victories in the first round of the singles main draw, including five in straight sets. No. 94 Ogando and sixth-ranked Wagner, the third seed, both won without conceding a game. Ogando’s 6-0, 6-0 victory came against FGCU’s Elizabeth Means and Wagner’s was over Lara Vovk of Georgia State.

In addition to Wagner, Madcur and Tanielian also earned victories over Panthers. Madcur took down Volejnicek, 6-4, 6-1, and Tanielian defeated Rehse in comeback fashion, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, No. 73 Zhang and No. 13 Lohan both beat players from UCF. Zhang, seeded No. 9-16, won 6-1, 6-2 over Sofia Baptista and Lohan, the fourth seed, rolled past Caroline Eberhart, 6-0, 6-1.

No. 63 Riobueno battled back for a three-set victory against Florida’s Porter, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Fuentes dropped her match to No. 111 Yukako Noi of Florida State, 1-6, 3-6.

Miami continued its strong play into the second round of singles competition, as four players moved on to the round of 16. Zhang and Ogando both picked up victories over ranked opponents to do so, with Zhng topping No. 88 Mariana Gould of Georgia, 6-4, 7-5, and Ogando coming back to beat No. 55 [9-16] Hannah King of Georgia, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Lohan and Wagner both earned wins over players from Georgia Tech, as Lohan downed McAdoo, 6-3, 6-2, and Wagner defeated Alexis Prokopuik, 6-4, 6-2.

Madcur fell 4-6, 0-6 to Georgia’s Caroline Brinson, ranked No. 72 and seeded No. 9-16, while Tanielian dropped her match 0-6, 3-6 to No. 66 Daneika Borthwick, seeded No. 9-16, and Riobueno was topped by Florida State’s Ariana Rahmanparast, 6-7 (7-9), 3-6.

“Tomorrow will be fun,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I’m excited to see some of the matchups in front of us.”

All four Hurricanes who moved on will face players from Florida in the round of 16 Saturday and one of Miami’s three doubles matches will be against a pair of Gators, too. Additionally, Fuentes will continue play in the singles consolation draw. Saturday’s action will begin with doubles competition at 10 a.m.
