Tanielian Makes Southeast Regionals Main Draw

ATHENS, Ga. Clara Tanielian of the University of Miami women’s tennis team won her qualifying singles match Thursday at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals to reach the main draw.

After a first round bye as the top seed in qualifying, the freshman picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Florida Atlantic’s Marisa Ruiz at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to advance.

Tanielian is now 9-3 in her first season at Miami, with a 7-1 mark in her last eight matches. The Ensuès-la-Redonne, France native has won five-straight matches, including earning the Singles A Back Draw title at the Bedford Cup last weekend.

With Tanielian’s victory, all eight Hurricanes are now in the singles main draw. Additionally, all four doubles pairs are in the doubles main draw.

Both main draws are scheduled to begin Friday, with doubles action opening the day. Senior Clementina Riobueno and sophomore Wendy Zhang, ranked No. 50, are one of eight seeded doubles pairs, earning the No. 4 spot. They will face Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and Megan Kurey of Georgia Tech at 9 a.m.

Two of Miami’s other doubles pairs—Tanielian and senior Stephanie Wagner, as well as sophomore Sinead Lohan and freshman Ana Madcur—will also be playing 9 a.m. Sophomores Silvia Fuentes and Yolimar Ogando are set for a 10 a.m. and they will be playing a ranked pair in No. 55 Spencer Liang and Peggy Porter of Florida, the seventh-seeded duo.

Four Hurricanes are seeded in singles, led by sixth-ranked Wagner, who is seeded third. She is followed by No. 13 Lohan, who earned the fourth seed. No. 63 Riobueno and No. 73 Zhang are both seeded in the No. 9-16 group. Madcur, Lohan, Ogando and Zhang will play their first singles matches at 11 a.m., followed by Tanielian at 12 p.m., Wagner at 12:30 p.m., Fuentes at 1 p.m. and Riobueno at 2 p.m.

The second round of singles action will also take place Friday, as singles matches will run into the evening.
