Ogando, Zhang Take Bedford Cup Doubles Title

Ogando, Zhang Take Bedford Cup Doubles Title

FORT MYERS, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team put forth a dominant performance on the second day of the Bedford Cup at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

The Hurricanes went 9-3 Saturday, with one loss coming in an all-Miami contest, and won another match via walkover. Included in those victories were two by the doubles team of Yolimar Ogando and Wendy Zhang. The top-seeded duo in the Doubles A Draw, the sophomores won the title in impressive fashion.

“Yoli and Wendy are leading the way not with words, but with actions,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “I am interested in seeing what they will bring tomorrow [in singles]. If these two individuals are able to play third and fourth days of a tournament, we are undoubtedly a better team.”

Ogando and Zhang played a tight match against fellow Hurricanes Silvia Fuentes and Clementina Riobueno in the semifinals, narrowly edging them 7-6 (7-4). The pair then rolled past FIU’s Maryna Veksler and Nina Nagode in the final, 6-1, to claim the crown.

In other doubles action, freshmen Ana Madcur and Clara Tanielian won via walkover over second-seeded Emily Fanning and Ariana Rahmanparast of Florida State in the Doubles A Draw North Consolation semifinals. They were then defeated 6-1 by FGCU’s Elizabeth Means and Breana Stampfli in the final of that consolation draw.

Miami was also quite impressive in singles play, as all four Hurricanes who advanced to the quarterfinals won yet again to set up a Miami-only final four.

No. 73 Zhang, the top seed, downed FGCU’s Joselyn Treyes Albarracin, 6-0, 6-2, and No. 94 Ogando, seeded second, won 6-4, 6-0 against USF’s Vera Bessonova. Madcur took down Fanning, the No. 4 seed, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, and Fuentes, a sophomore, earned a comeback 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Veksler.

Riobueno, a senior who is ranked No. 63 and was seeded third in the Singles A Draw, and Tanielian both played in consolation matches. Riobueno cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win against Ariana Rahmanparast and then fell 3-6, 6-1, 0-1 (7-10) in the consolation quarterfinals to USF’s Jessica Cortes Chaves.

Tanielian won both of her matches, first knocking off Florida Atlantic’s Cassie Pough, 6-2, 6-3, and then defeating Ana Roman Dominguez 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the consolation semifinals.

All six Hurricanes who made the trip to Fort Myers will be back in action Sunday on the final day of the Bedford Cup.

“The more they play and are out there competing hard, the more chances they create for themselves to get better and achieve their individual goals,” Vallverdu said. “We are working on completing their tennis matches every time they are out there and making that their base and norm, win or lose.”

Action will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday and the all-Miami semifinals will pit Zhang against Madcur and Fuentes against Ogando.
