W. Tennis Earns Three Ranked Wins in P.R.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico The University of Miami women’s tennis team played three doubles matches and six singles matches against players from Georgia Saturday at the Puerto Rico College Challenge.

Highlighting the results for the Hurricanes were singles victories over ranked opponents by sophomores Sinead Lohan and Yolimar Ogando, as well as a doubles win against a top-20 duo by seniors Clementina Riobueno and Stephanie Wagner.

Riobueno and Wagner, who played together Friday for just the second time in their careers, picked up an impressive 7-5 victory over Mariana Gould and Ellen Perez, who are ranked No. 20 in the country.

In the other doubles matches, freshman Clara Tanielian and sophomore Wendy Zhang fell 3-6 to No. 16 Silvia Garcia and Kennedy Shaffer, while Lohan and freshman Ana Madcur dropped their match against No. 51 Caroline Brinson and Hannah King, 4-6.

Lohan, ranked No. 13, rolled to a stellar 6-1, 6-1 victory over King, who is ranked No. 55. Meanwhile, No. 94 Ogando moved to 4-0 on the season against ranked players by downing No. 88 Gould, 6-4, 6-3.

Madcur also won her singles match, picking up a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Georgia’s Laura Patterson.

Three singles matches went the way of the Bulldogs, as No. 29 Perez defeated No. 6 Wagner, 6-3, 6-2, while No. 58 Garcia beat No. 73 Zhang, 6-4, 6-4, and No. 72 Brinson won 6-0, 5-7, 1-6 against No. 63 Riobueno.

Miami will wrap up play at Surfside Las Palmas del Mar Resort Sunday when they play singles matches against players from Illinois. Action is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.
