Tanielian/Zhang Win Doubles, Ogando to Final
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In the all-Hurricanes final of the Orange Doubles Draw Saturday at the Miami Fall Invite, it was freshman Clara Tanielian and sophomore Wendy Zhang who came out on top.
The duo won 6-4 over freshman Ana Madcur and senior Clementina Riobueno to come away with the title at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
“Clara and Wendy are fun to watch on the doubles court,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “They have a lot of room for improvement, but it is a great starting point. Our focus as a team is big on the doubles point, so I am very pleased the girls are understanding that and putting the importance necessary on the matter.”
Also in doubles action, sophomores Silvia Fuentes and Yolimar Ogando, seeded second in the Green Doubles Draw, beat Pitt’s Natsumi Okamoto and Gabriela Rezende 6-4 in a consolation match.
Ogando turned in an impressive showing in Orange Singles Draw action as well. Ranked No. 94 in the country, she played the first two matches of her career against ranked opponents and won both of them.
The Carolina, Puerto Rico native first topped No. 49 Frances Altick, seeded second, in a three-set comeback win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. She then took down No. 77 Alizee Michaud of Auburn, 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the final, where she will face Auburn’s Pleun Burgmans, ranked No. 47 and seeded first.
“Yolimar played great tennis today, with some minor hiccups, but they are a part of the game,” Vallverdu said. “If she continues to push her limits, she can win the tournament and set herself up for a great year.”
Madcur also won a pair of singles matches Saturday, first topping Auburn’s Sofia Blanno, 6-1, 6-2, for the first singles victory of her career. She then earned a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win against Caroline Turner of Auburn to reach the Green Singles Consolation Draw final, where she is set to meet Auburn’s Alannah Griffin.
Tanielian’s opening round Green Singles Draw match went unfinished Friday, but she completed the comeback Saturday, quickly sealing the deal for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Griffin. Tanielian then turned in an impressive 6-0, 6-3 victory against third-seeded Megan Kurey of Georgia Tech. Vanderbilt’s Fernanda Contreras followed that by topping Tanielian in the draw’s semifinals, 6-4, 6-4.
After dropping a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision to No. 116 Gabriella De Santis in the Orange Singles Draw quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Zhang bounced back against Vanderbilt’s Ellie Yates. Zhang, ranked No. 73, won 7-5, 6-0 in her final singles match of the tournament.
Overall, the Hurricanes went 9-7 Saturday, with one of the defeats coming in a Miami vs. Miami match. All eight remaining singles matches in the tournament are set for 9:00 a.m. Sunday and the one doubles match still to be played will come next. Live stats will be available HERE.
