@CanesVB Drops Match to Oral Roberts
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Miami volleyball team dropped its final match at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational, falling to Oral Roberts in four sets.
The Hurricanes (3-3) won the opening set of their match against the Golden Eagles, winning the first set 25-21. But Oral Roberts responded with a 25-21 victory in the second set to head into the intermission tied at one set apiece. The Golden Eagles came out of the break on a roll, taking the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-19, to secure a four-set win over the Canes.
Miami had two players record double-doubles on Saturday night with Olga Strantzali tallying team highs with 14 kills and 14 digs, as well as three blocks and an ace, to pick up her fourth consecutive double-double. Kelsie Groot also racked up 12 kills and 10 digs to go along with two blocks and an ace in Saturday’s match.
Middle blockers Alexis Mourning and Lucia Pampana combined for 13 kills and eight blocks. Mourning tallied seven kills, three blocks and an ace while hitting a team-high .667, while Pampana recorded six kills and a team-high five blocks. Mourning was named to the all-tournament team following the conclusion of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational.
Freshman Anna Haak made her first career start, recording nine kills and an ace, while Haley Templeton dished out 39 assists and had 10 digs and two blocks to finish with Miami’s third double-double of the match. Senior Kalysta White had 10 digs as the Hurricanes’ libero.
The Canes are back in action next weekend, travelling to Baton Rouge, La., to play matches against Purdue and the host LSU Tigers. Miami will face Purdue at 6 p.m. on Sept. 12 and is scheduled to take on LSU at 2 p.m. on Sept. 13.
