@MiamiTrack Announces Four Additions for 2015
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Monday was the first day of the 2015-16 academic year at the University of Miami and the Hurricane track and field family added four new members on the opening day of classes.
Ebony Morrison, Aiyanna Stiverne, Taylor Gunn and Kyra Maryland officially became Hurricanes on Monday, joining an incoming class that also includes women’s sprinters Carolyn Brown, Brittny Ellis, Erin Ford, women’s hurdlers Samantha Gonzalez and Anna Sjourkje Runia, women’s thrower Zakiya Rashid and men’s sprinter Isaiah Taylor.
Morrison is a junior hurdler who transferred to Miami from Auburn. A Miami native, Morrison qualified for the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary in the women’s 110m hurdles. Morrison was named to the 2014 SEC Outdoor All-Freshman Team in the women’s 100m hurdles and reached the NCAA Championships in the same event, placing 21st. In addition to her experience in the hurdles, Morrison has competed collegiately as a 200m runner and a long jumper.
Stiverne comes to Miami after spending her first two years at UTEP. The sprinter will be a junior in 2015-16, her first season with the Canes. A Plantation, Fla., native, Stiverne has proven her talents at the collegiate level, qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary in both of her years at UTEP. In 2015, Stiverne was a member of the women’x 4x100m relay that won gold at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. As a freshman, she helped the Miners finish first at the C-USA Championships in the women’s 4x400m relay. That same year, Stiverne was named NCAA Honorable Mention for her involvement in the 4x100m relay team that ran at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She closed her inaugural collegiate campaign competing at the 2014 World Junior Championships as a member of Team USA.
Gunn also comes to Miami from UTEP, transferring after earning her bachelor’s degree in communications. As a senior, Gunn qualified for the 2015 NCAA West Preliminary in the women’s discus and scored at the 2015 C-USA Outdoor Championships in the discus, shot put and hammer throw. The Southfield, Mich., native also scored at the 2015 C-USA Indoor Championships in the shot put. As a junior, Gunn helped the Miners place second at the 2014 C-USA Outdoor Championships.
Maryland is a talented jumper that comes to Miami from Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas. She is a three-time district champion in the high jump and competed in the TAAF Games of Texas. A freshman at Miami who enrolled during the summer, Maryland was team captain her senior year at Southlake Carroll and helped set multiple school records on Carroll’s relay teams. Maryland is the daughter of two-time NCAA national champion, three-time Super Bowl Champion, College Football Hall of Famer, UM Football Ring of Honor inductee, Consensus All-American, Outland Trophy Winner and UM Sports Hall of Famer Russell Maryland.
Morrison, Stiverne, Gunn and Maryland are all eligible to compete for the Canes in the 2015-16 season.
