Collins continued his torrid stretch with another dominant performance, tying a career high with four hits and connecting on his fifth home run in the last six games. |
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – No. 12 Miami extended its winning streak to six straight games Friday night, trouncing visiting NYIT 26-0 in its series opener at Mark Light Field.
The Hurricanes (36-13) recorded 24 hits in the offensive barrage, plating multiple runs in each of the game’s first four innings, including five in the first and eight in the third.
“It was a wild and crazy game,” head coach Jim Morris said. “We played very well offensively and defensively, and we pitched well. It was a very complete game for us.
“Sometimes you get rolling and it’s tough to stop.”
The 26 runs were the most since a 27-1 win over Pace on May 2, 2003.
“We went into it not knowing what kind of team they were,” sophomore Zack Collins said. “We just played hard, we pitched well and we played defense well. We had a good night.”
Junior lefthander Thomas Woodrey tossed five scoreless innings for Miami, allowing four hits – all singles – with four strikeouts. NYIT (14-28) starter Matt Diaz was tagged for 14 runs in his 2.1 innings of work with seven walks and zero strikeouts.
Woodrey improved his record to 5-2 with the win, needing just 54 pitches before the game was well in hand.
Four different Hurricanes recorded home runs in the outburst, including the first career blast from sophomore Jacob Heyward, the team-leading 13th homer from junior David Thompson and the fifth home run in the past six games for Collins.
Seven players had multi-hit performances, including a career high-tying four hits from Collins (4-for-5, four runs, four RBI) and a four-RBI night from Thompson (4-for-4, three runs, three walks).
Senior Garrett Kennedy, who was one of six Hurricanes to take part in graduation ceremonies over the past two days, connected on his first career grand slam in the third inning.
“We went out there thinking to go out there and play the game hard,” Kennedy said. “That’s just what the outcome was today.”
Freshman Jesse Lepore and senior Dan Sayles combined to toss the final four scoreless innings. Lepore struck out a career-high four batters, while Sayles needed just 22 pitches to finish off the game.
Miami returns to Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field Saturday for game two visiting NYIT. First pitch for the contest, slated for broadcast on Canes All-Access and WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 7 p.m.
