Chargers Draft Perryman in Second Round

CHICAGO – Miami Hurricanes linebacker Denzel Perryman was selected with the 48th overall draft pick by the San Diego Chargers Friday night in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Perryman is the first Miami linebacker to be selected in the NFL Draft since the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Sean Spence in 2012. Perryman’s selection as the 48th overall pick is the highest selection for a Miami linebacker since 2007 when the New York Giants took Jon Beason 25th overall.

Perryman is the third Hurricane to be selected in the top 50 of this year’s NFL Draft.

On day one of the NFL Draft, Miami offensive lineman Ereck Flowers was selected with the ninth overall pick by the New York Giants. Miami wide receiver Phillip Dorsett followed later in the first round as he was selected with the 29th overall pick.

The Coral Gables, Fla. native led the Hurricanes with 110 total tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss this past season. He concluded his career with 351 tackles, which ranks among Miami’s all-time Top 10.

Following the regular season, the Associated Press recognized him as a Third Team All-American. In addition, Perryman was finalist for the Butkus Award. Following the year, he was selected to the 2014 All-ACC First Team selection by both the ACSMA and ACC coaches. He also was one of four Hurricanes to earn a spot in the 2015 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Coverage of the 2015 NFL Draft is being aired live on ESPN and NFL Network.
