CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Despite 11 points from junior Sheldon McClellan and a career-high 11 points from Ivan Cruz-Uceda, Miami fell at home to visiting North Carolina, 73-64.
North Carolina (20-9, 10-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) reached 20 victories for the 11th time in 12 years under coach Roy Williams. Miami (18-11, 8-8) lost at home for the sixth time this year, and lost to North Carolina for the first time since 2012.
North Carolina’s J.P Tokoto had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Tar Heels. Miami guard Angel Rodriguez, nursing a right wrist injury, was held out of the starting lineup for the first time this season and played only three minutes.
Manu Lecomte and Ja’Quan Newton added 10 points apiece for Miami. The Hurricane bench outscored North Carolina 33-9.
Noteworthy
* The Hurricanes 73-64 setback to North Carolina marked Miami’s first loss to the Tar Heels since Feb. 15, 2012. Miami had defeated North Carolina in four straight games.
* Miami’s matchup with North Carolina was its final home game of the season. The Hurricanes finished the year with an 10-6 record at the BankUnited Center this season.
* Miami has won at least 10 games at the BankUnited Center in 10 of the 12 full seasons the Canes have called the arena home. The BUC opened in January of 2003 with a win over North Carolina.
