Freshmen Shine In Day One At Bedford Cup

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Miami’s four freshmen have not shown any signs of backing down at the Bedford Cup.

The Hurricanes opened day one of the tournament by winning three out of their four doubles matches.

In Flight A doubles, Sinead Lohan and Wendy Zhang began the morning defeating FIU’s Carlotta Orlando and Kaitlin Brozovich, 8-3. They then followed it up with an 8-4 defeat of host UNF’s Taylor Hollander and Marina Cunningham to reach the semifinals.

Lohan and Zhang will take on Emily Fanning and Gabby Castaneda (FSU) in the semifinals of Flight A tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.

Flight B featured a rematch from the Miami Fall Invite. In late September, freshman duo of Silvia Fuentes and Judith Bohnenkamp faced off against South Florida’s Hailey Grillo and Laura Argente Escamilla. Grillo and Escamilla got the best of the Miami tandem the first time around, 8-6.

But, there was a different outcome Monday morning. Fuentes/Bohnenkamp outlasted the South Florida doubles team, 8-7, for their first career doubles victory.

In the semifinal, Fuentes and Bohnenkamp battled with UCF’s Clare Mendel and Monica Matias. The Canes’ rookie doubles team fell just short of their second victory, losing the match 8-7.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the afternoon occurred in singles Flight A in a match between Miami’s Silvia Fuentes and FSU’s top-player and senior Daneika Borthwick. In just the freshman’s eighth career match, Fuentes was able to defeat the veteran Borthwick in straight sets.

Fuentes captured the first set 6-3 and cruised to a 6-1 win in the second on the way to her fourth career victory and a date in the quarters against UF’s Stefani Stojic.

Zhang was also able to come away with a victory in round one of the Flight A bracket against Esther Zuniga of UF. Zhang and Zuniga traded wins in the first two sets (6-3, 3-6), but it was the Hurricane that was able to take the third set, 6-2, and move on to the quarterfinals.

Awaiting Zhang in the quarters is Peggy Porter of Florida. They will play tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.

Looking for her seventh-consecutive win, Sinead Lohan defeated Sarah Means (FGCU) in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to reserve her place in the next round of Flight A. She will face Yukako Noi of FSU tomorrow in the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m.

Bohnenkamp was defeated by Emily Fanning of FSU, 6-1, 6-0. She will compete in the consolation bracket tomorrow afternoon.
