Hurricanes' Run at Riviera/ITA Ends

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The University of Miami’s third-ranked doubles pair of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno ended their run at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships Friday afternoon.

After defeating De Santis/Niehaus of Ohio State in the round of 16, Albuquerque and Riobueno had a top-five showdown in the quarters against Auburn’s fifth-ranked pair of Emily Flickinger and Pleun Burgmans.

Albuquerque/Riobueno seized the first set 6-2, but Flickinger/Burgmans responded with a 6-1 victory in the second set. In the deciding 10-point tiebreaker, the Auburn duo was able to outlast the Hurricane pair, 12-10.

No. 18 Stephanie Wagner faced UCLA’s No. 2 Robin Anderson in the round of 16 after a first round win.

Anderson won the first set, 7-6(9), but as she did all week, Wagner answered with a 6-2 second set victory. In the third set, Anderson came out on top 6-3, advancing to the semifinals.

Wagner and Lileikite won their way into the doubles main draw earlier in the week, winning three matches consetuive matches. But, after a first-round exit in the main draw, the pair did not back down and continued their impressive play in the doubles back draw.

In the quaterfinals of the consolation bracket, the unranked pair straight-setted Kentucky’s No. 11 Nadia Ravita and Aldila Sutjiadi, 6-1, 6-3.

In-state rivals No. 13 Kourtney Keegan and Belinda Woolcock of Florida were awating them in the final four. Wagner/Lileikite got off to a fast start, winning the first set 6-3, but Keegan/Woolcok responded with their own 6-3 win in the second set.

With a trip to the finals on the line, the Canes were able to take the decisive 10-point tiebreaker, 12-10.

In the Sunday consolation final, Wagner and Lileikite began the match with 6-3 victory in the first set. No. 3 Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips won the second set 6-1 to force a third-round tiebreaker. The UCLA duo took the match and the consolation championship with a 10-6 teibreaking win.

The Hurricanes return to action next weekend, beginning Friday, Oct. 10, at the Bedford Cup in Jacksonville.
